Gallery EM is pleased to present Shape of Mass, a solo exhibition of new works by Rahm Parc (b. 1986, Seoul) from October 20 to November 19, 2016. Referencing contemporary media such as the Internet, image-editing programs (e.g. Photoshop) and 3D printing, Parc examines the exposed flip-sides of conventional images. In her upcoming solo show at Gallery EM, she will present around 10 new paintings visualizing the concept of ‘mass.’
Parc creates a unique artistic language using various media to carefully revise traditional methods of painting. Among various media, 3D printing has become the main tool used in Parc’s work to realize her studies as paintings. The 3D printer generates an invisible space on the ulterior side of a visible image by printing successive patterned layers with a certain mass.
Parc innovatively reshuffles the main elements of a painting, such as the plane, brushes, and pigments. For her new series, Parc created a manual in which the canvas plane is set as an index for volume and brush thickness and pigment concentration as indices for density. Following the manual, the artist creates a path with a brushstroke, then applies several layers of pigment to the canvas surface. In this process, Parc exists as a role player, and the images produced by overlaying brushstrokes and pigment on the plane remind us of the presence of the surface’s flip-side. In this way, Parc provides a contemporary re-appropriation of the hackneyed themes of traditional painting through the rather unfamiliar concept of ‘mass,’ which induces an open perspective. This exhibition will display Parc’s Marine Painting series, which implicitly evokes the theme of ‘resolution’ (as ‘marine’ and ‘resolution’ have the same pronunciation in Korean) and stimulates viewers’ curiosity. The series RYB and K, which represent the beginnings of Parc’s research in this area, will also be shown at the exhibition.
Rahm Parc was born in Seoul, Korea, where she currently works. She received a BA in Visual Communication Design from Gacheon University and a MFA in painting from Hongik University. She has had solo shows at Cake Gallery, Seoul (2014) and Gallery EM, Seoul (2016). She has also participated in group exhibitions at Il Min Museum, Seoul (2015), Common Center, Seoul (2015) and Cake Gallery, Seoul (2015).
