Koh San Keum (b. 1966) lives and works in South Korea. She selects ‘image’ from Novels, newspapers, poems, popular songs, essays and law books. She begins to transcribe a part of a book that she has read, a part that has left a decisive impression. She is equipped with a professional sensibility regarding arranging the size of the panel and the number of letters to be replaced with pearls. She precisely adjusts the panel’s outer rim with her graph paper and carpenter’s square; she follows a scientist-like accuracy in determining the number of lines for the transcription.
Needless to say, the foundation of such mechanical and mathematical arrangement lies under in visual formation or aesthetics. The regular movement gradually begins to operate. Her transcription, pasting of pearls, proceeds according to a standard based on the number of letters and spaces between them. The semantic context of sentences disappears while a morphological, visual formation appears instead.
Koh San Keum studied at Ewha Womans University (Korea) and Pratt Institute (NY). Her works are included as the collection of major art institutions and organizations like SeMA (Seoul Museum of Art), MMCA (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art). Furthermore, she participated in major exhibition called Dansaekhwa: Korean Monochrome Paintings at MMCA (2102).
