Gallery EM is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Hyemin Lee entitled Metamorphosis, which will run from February 18 to March 19, 2016. This will be the artist’s second solo show at Gallery EM.
The exhibition will present the artist’s most recent series of sculptures in bronze, together with her shaped plaster bandage works and hand-sewn pillow series, reflecting important changes in Lee’s inner artistic world.
The works produced by Hyemin Lee represent her personal experiences from childhood to the present day; she uses materials that evoke the inconsequential and the fragile, such as old fabric, broken wooden frames, and plaster bandages for treating patients in hospitals. The artist brings a new life to these formerly insignificant and incomplete materials. Her art is almost always inspired by her own experiences, whether physical or emotional. For instance, Lee produced her plaster-bandage series, a collection of flat, monochromatic white works, while receiving treatment for a broken arm in the form of a plaster-cast and bandages. She skillfully layered plaster bandages on wooden panels to create what appear to be a series of beautiful lace works.
Her best known series of works, constructed from numerous small hand-sewn fabric pillows, evoke personal memories, dreams, and hopes. Formed from the discarded bed linen and clothes of the artist’s family and friends, the pillows are textile repositories of individual memory. Multiplied in many layers, this soft and rather fragile domestic items gain great power. Lee’s works transform things that we normally treat as tangential into main agents. Accordingly, the title Metamorphosis, which refers to transformation and change, expresses the essential principle of her exhibition. Notably, Lee’s new sculptures are composed of bronze, a robust material, in contrast with the soft and fragile materials normally used in her work. The use of this new material reflects Lee’s attempt to express the mature inner world of her artistic expression, as if a caterpillar were metamorphosing into a beautiful butterfly. The new works displayed in Metamorphosis will give viewers the opportunity to witness and experience the artist’s development over time, as she creates a more complete and stronger inner world.
